He was a teacher, a businessman, a college president and the founder of a respected think tank.It’s all part of former FSU President Stanley Marshall’s legacy.Doctor Marshall passed away at the age of 91.He served as FSU president from 1969 to 76.Marshall served on the school’s board of trustees as recently as 2005.In 1987, he founded the James Madison Institute, a think tank for public policy.”He would come in until the last days,” said Institute CEO Bob McClure. “And when he wasn’t able to drive, his wonderful wife of over 50 years Shirley would drive him here,” he said. “He would come in every couple of weeks, but he was always interested, sharp as a tack,” McClure said.Doctor Marshall stayed committed to higher education long after his tenure as FSU president and board of trustee member were over.He served on Florida’s Board of Governors from 2004 until 2012.Marshall’s funeral is set for 11 a.m. Monday, June 16th at Tallahassee’s Trinity United Methodist Church.TALLAHASSEE, Fla. He was 91.A spokeswoman at the James Madison Institute confirmed that Marshall passed Sunday at home in the Westminster Oaks retirement community in Tallahassee after suffering from illness in recent years.Marshall was named Florida State president in 1969 and served for seven years. He founded the James Madison Institute in 1987.Marshall served in the United States Army during World War II and was Florida State’s president amid heavy protests to the Vietnam War and during the civil rights movement.
