The Republican Women’s Club of St Johns County has invited Historic City New readers to attend their luncheon meeting on Wednesday, February 19th, when their guest speaker will be Michael Werner; North Florida Director of Development for The James Madison Institute. The monthly meetings are held at TGIF, located at 318 SR-312 in Saint Augustine, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Lunch and the program is $15 per person — member or guest. In 2010, Werner worked as an assistant field director for the Republican Party of Florida; directing volunteer efforts for the Rick Scott gubernatorial campaign in North Florida. Before joining the James Madison Institute, Werner previously worked with The Heritage Foundation. He participated in their Young Leaders Program in the fall of 2012.Werner grew up in Jacksonville and graduated high school from Stanton College Prep. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Economics from Florida State University.
The James Madison Institute is a non-profit, Florida-based research and educational organization engaged in the battle of ideas. They are rooted in a belief in the U.S. Constitution and such timeless ideals as limited government, economic freedom, federalism, and individual liberty — coupled with individual responsibility.“Silence on matters of public policy in Florida, would be an abridgement of the essence of our mission to keep Floridians informed about their government and to advance practical public policy solutions,” Werner said. “We believe James Madison would have approved, and no name could better suit the Institute.”“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations,” Madison, himself, once said.
