TALLAHASSEE — Former Florida State President J. Stanley Marshall has died. He was 91.
A spokeswoman at the James Madison Institute confirmed that Marshall passed Sunday at home in the Westminster Oaks retirement community in Tallahassee after suffering from illness in recent years.Marshall was named Florida State president in 1969 and served for seven years. He founded the James Madison Institute in 1987.Marshall served in the United States Army during World War II and was Florida State’s president amid heavy protests to the Vietnam War and during the civil rights movement. His book “The Tumultuous Sixties: Campus Unrest and Student Life at a Southern University” was published in 2006.Marshall was married to wife Shirley for almost 50 years, and the pair had five children and 13 grandchildren.http://www.gainesville.com/article/20140609/WIRE/140609650?tc=ar
