Florida Redistricting Hearings - First Round
Panhandle & Northwest FloridaEvery 10 years, after the results of the decennial federal census are released, lawmakers in every state must draw new boundaries for all of the legislative and congressional districts within their state. These new districts must be drawn in time for next election cycle.
In accordance with the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1962 ruling in Baker v. Carr – the so-called “one man, one vote” decision – all districts must be as equal in population as practicable. In addition, a 2010 amendment to Florida’s state constitution added other criteria.
In the months ahead, Florida’s legislative leaders will be seeking the public’s input as they undertake this task, the results of which will help determine the composition of the Legislature and of Florida’s delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives in the decade ahead.
JMI policy staff will be attending and all members are encouraged to make their voices heard. The schedule for the June hearings is as follows:
* June 20: Tallahassee, Capitol, 412 Knott Building, 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Madison Movie Night V: "An Inconvenient Tax"
TallahasseeJMI is promoting liberty through film in its Madison Movie Nights film series. The next featured movie, An Inconvenient Tax, will be shown on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:00 PM in HCB 310 on the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee.
An Inconvenient Tax reveals how Congress uses our impossibly complex tax code to achieve political goals that have nothing to do with raising revenue. Featuring economic experts, commentators, and political voices such as Steve Forbes, Mike Huckabee, Noam Chomsky, David M. Walker, and others, the film traces the evolution of the income tax through wars, economic booms and busts, and presidencies. To inspire debate and encourage change, the film also presents several credible options for reform.
Presenting the tax code as a burden that affects us all, this timely and engaging film transcends partisanship--and offers Americans a chance to unite in a grassroots movement for change. More details about the film, including a trailer, can be viewed at: http://aninconvenienttax.com.
For more details on the JMI viewing on April 13 in Tallahassee, please contact Jenny Stone at: jstone@jamesmadison.org or call 850-386-3131. - Apr 11 2011
