Panel: The politics and policies of progress

Technologists and economists have joined together to create a new field of inquiry: progress studies. We know that innovation is a key determinant to growth. Progress studies seeks to identify and promote the key ingredients to innovation: talent, education, dynamism, collaboration, and experimentation, among many other things. What are the key insights from this exciting new field, and how can the state of Florida best harness and channel these? Join 1517 Fund cofounder Michael Gibson, Mercatus Center Senior Fellow Adam Thierer, and Cato Institute technology fellow Will Duffield to find out.

Panel: Getting state innovation over the finish line

As policymakers know, getting the perfect policies just right is only one part of the battle. Equally, and sometimes more, challenging is the process of shepherding the right policies through the existing political environment, to say nothing about getting administrators and regulators on board. In this panel with out-of-state legislators, we will discuss the steps that other state governments have taken to get pro-innovation policies over the finish line, whether that means navigating through legislative session or setting up an entirely new deregulatory environment within the state government. We’ll hear from Arizona State Representative Steve Kaiser, Utah State Representative Cory Maloy, and Utah Office of Regulatory Relief Director Dane Ishihara about their experiences in bringing an industry-neutral regulatory sandbox to life.
