I find it odd that a site dedicated in the name of James Madison has next to nothing about the second amendment. Perhaps you should change the name to something more appropriate

While the minimum wage is intended to insure that individuals can live on what they earn, the real impact falls on the employer, who must be able to absorb the increased labor cost or raise the price of his product to compensate. This could lead to loss of business due to overpriced products.

JMI Public Affairs Director Thomas Perrin found the following article that also addresses the question regarding the relationship between minimum wage increases and the hiring of illegal aliens:
http://www.thefreemanonline.org/featured/at-the-intersection-of-the-minimum-wage-and-illegal-immigration/#

In this article, Howard Baetjer Jr. answers a student’s question about the effects of minimum wage laws and illegal immigration. Discussed are the many downfalls of raising the minimum wage and how it interacts with the effects of illegal immigration.

A JMI Facebook reader made an interesting comment regarding this blog post:
"You may also make the argument that increasing minimum wage increases the hiring of illegal aliens. The illegal aliens become the unskilled labor force at a lower cost to employers. Are there any statistics to support this idea?"

After a bit of research, I found the following:
A study by economist Theodore Palivos analyzes the effects of the minimum wage on labor markets and finds that minimum wage laws do, in fact lead to job competition between illegal immigrants and domestic unskilled or low-wage workers. Aside from the Palivos study there doesn’t seem to be too much in-depth research available on this specific relationship. However, minimum wage laws by nature prevent legal workers from working for less than a fixed amount, which creates the opportunity for illegal immigrants and “under the table” workers to fill the wage gap by working for a little less. Therefore, minimum wage laws can be said to reduce the competitiveness of low-wage unskilled legal workers in favor of illegal labor.

Here is the abstract for the study: http://ideas.repec.org/p/mcd/mcddps/2007_01.html
