04/07/05 - School Choice at the Crossroads: Bush v. Holmes, The Supreme Court Battle

April 7, 2005

(Page is image-intensive so may take some time to load completely)

On April 7, JMI's luncheon debate series brought Clark Neily of the Institute for Justice and Howard Simon of the ACLU of Florida together to debate the constitutionality of Florida's Opportunity Scholarships.  Mr. Neily is lead attorney in the case the Florida Supreme Courty will begin hearing this June.  As executive director of Florida's ACLU, Dr. Simon has been at the forefront of the legal battles on school choice in Florida for the last several years.   Moderating the debate was Don Weidner, Dean of FSU College of Law.

State education officials and policymakers joined JMI members to hear these two experts debate the history of the "Blaine Amendment", best educational reform practices in Florida and the implications of political Supreme Court rulings for existing government-sectarian institutional relationship in the state.

JMI would like to thank the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation for making this event possible.
