05/01/03 - Commentary #05 - Taxpayers Serving As Collection Agents for Unions - This Practice Must End Nowby Gary Landry May 1, 2003 How taxpayers fund the union machinery Public sector employees, of which teachers are the largest group, have every right to form and join unions for the purpose of collectively bargaining contracts. Florida passed a collective bargaining law in the early 1970s granting this right to employees. As such, these unions have a right to assess dues upon those who voluntarily join. However, that law does not grant unions the right to make their employers (read that, government bodies such as school districts) their dues-collection agents.
